Yuri’s Night Space Coast Highlights 2018

Space Shuttle Atlantis

space shuttle atlantis yuris night space coast 2018 john kraus.JPG

On April 13, 1985, Space Shuttle Atlantis arrived at Kennedy Space Center (KSC) to be prepped for its maiden flight. Over the following 26 years, Atlantis would go on to launch 33 times - deploying satellites & planetary probes Magellan & Galileo, delivering vital components to the International Space Station, & pioneering the Shuttle-Mir era. In July of 2011, NASA's final shuttle mission was flown by Atlantis (STS-135), marking the end of the Shuttle Era. Today, Atlantis is on full display at the historic Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida.

This year's *epic* Yuri's Night Space Coast party will take place underneath Shuttle Atlantis 34 years to the day since the orbiter arrived at KSC. Come join us to celebrate this historic spacecraft, the excitement of human space exploration, and the anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's monumental flight into orbit as the first human being in space!

Video Game Developer & Private Astronaut RICHARD GARRIOTT

Richard Garriott de Cayeux is a founding father of the videogame industry and the commercial spaceflight industry, a flown astronaut, and an accomplished explorer.

He has been inducted into the computer gaming hall of fame and has received the industry lifetime achievement award. He is credited with creating the now ubiquitous term “avatar” for one’s virtual self and the category of massively multiplayer games (MMORPGs). He authored the acclaimed Ultima Series and has built 3 leading gaming companies: Origin Systems (sold to Electronic Arts), Destination Games (sold to NCsoft) and Portalarium where he is building Shroud of the Avatar, the successor to his previous works.

As a principal shaper of the commercial spaceflight industry, he cofounded Space Adventures, the only company to arrange space flights for private citizens and is the sixth private astronaut to live aboard the International Space Station. The son of a NASA astronaut, he became the first second-generation astronaut and has been a key leader in civilian and commercial space as an investor and Board member of institutions such as the X-Prize Foundation, Space Adventures, and Planetary Resources.

Richard is an avid explorer, having traveled around the globe from the jungles of the Amazon to the South Pole, the deep seas of the Titanic and hydrothermal vents to orbiting the earth aboard the International Space Station. His non-profit and philanthropic works include serving on the boards of The Explorers Club and The Challenger Center for Science Education.

Featuring filmmaker Robert Stone

Chasing the Moon, a film by Robert Stone, thoroughly reimagines the race to the moon for a new generation, upending much of the conventional mythology surrounding the effort. The three-part series recasts the Space Age as a fascinating stew of scientific innovation and PR savvy, political calculation and media spectacle, visionary impulses and personal drama. With no narration and using only archival footage — including a visual feast of previously lost or overlooked material — the film features new interviews with a diverse cast of characters who played key roles in these historic events. Among those included are astronauts Buzz Aldrin, Frank Borman and Bill Anders; Freeman Dyson, the renowned futurist and theoretical physicist; Sergei Khrushchev, the son of former Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev, who played a prominent role in the Soviet space program as a rocket engineer; Poppy Northcutt, the 25-year-old “mathematics whiz” who gained worldwide attention as the first woman to serve in the all-male bastion of NASA’s Mission Control; and Ed Dwight, the Air Force pilot selected by the Kennedy administration to train as America’s first black astronaut.

While other documentaries have largely painted a familiar narrative of goals set, obstacles overcome, disasters averted and missions accomplished, Chasing the Moon tells a vastly more entertaining and surprising story. As the film reveals, the drive to land a man on the moon was fueled as much by politics as it was by technology and was a controversial undertaking during a volatile time.

Pauli the PSM

First coming to prominence as drummer for Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz), Pauli “The PSM” assumed the role of MD (music director) for Jamie xx and FKA twigs.

In demand for countless high profile gigs, Pauli opted to leave MD duties behind and focus on his solo debut body of work 'The Idea of Tomorrow' (EP) featuring Idris Elba. The companion critically acclaimed short film (directed by Rohan Blair-Mangat) was described as "an Afro-futurist fairytale exploring themes of our current dystopian landscape set on the exoplanet, Kepler-452b."

In 2018 Pauli released his sophomore EP, 'Secret Life of a Badman' from new label 'Badman Space Program' which also aims to provide underprivileged children resources to learn about space exploration and science. Subsuquently, a teaser for new single 'Buss Case' was shown at NASA Kennedy Space Center in December.

Pauli returns to Kennedy Space Center for Yuri’s Night Space Coast to premiere the full video for “Buss Case” on our main stage!

Guidance Internal Experience

by Cosmic Perspective

Something is happening to space travelers. They are returning to Earth entirely changed. They return as artists and humanitarians, desperate to share their new perspective. During this intimate, immersive experience, we will explore the state of the cosmic perspective today and where we are heading in the very near future.

During the "Guidance Internal" experience, rocket launch documentarians, Ryan Chylinski and MaryLiz Bender, will take you behind the scenes at the launchpads, sharing the science and human stories behind each mission. This visually stunning show will debut their slow motion and liftoff videography, as well as music they composed on NASA’s Kennedy Space Center launch pads.

Limited Edition Art by Miami-based artist, JonLouis

Come see the INCREDIBLE space-themed art JonLouis has uniquely created for Yuri’s Night Space Coast!

"At the age of 22, Brooklyn born with deep Puerto Rican roots, JonLouis established himself as one of the youngest most unique artist globally. Developing his own style focused on representing external reality by adopting an admirable assortment of spontaneous colors, creating an atmosphere for the viewer to perceive the energy. Not only have his paintings caught the attention of influential collectors around the world, but also Jonlouis uses his art to propel his community. Donating pieces for multiple notable charities, giving speeches for Congress Woman Frederica Wilson and showcasing his art in acclaimed Television shows. JonLouis’s work is an illustration of internally driven courage to be creative, but most importantly courage to make a real change."

Will there be food?

Some. Be sure to eat a good dinner before you come at 8pm. We will have a limited amount of light snacks.

What should I wear?

Yuri's Night is basically a space theme-nightclub that encourages costumes, play/cosplay and self expression! You can wear black pants or galaxy leggings, your favorite Sci-fi costume, or what you would wear to a nightclub on a Saturday night. Just make sure there are no masks covering your face (KSC Visitor Center rules).

Is this an all ages event?

Since this is a night club environment we don't encourage people to bring kids. But just like at Burning Man, some people will. If you would bring your kids to Burning Man, feel free to bring them to Yuri's Night. We are only checking your age if you want to drink.
